The curlew gets its name from the two-syllable fluting call of the species common in Britain. Altogether there are eight birds belonging to the curlew genus, although some may be races of the same species.

What does a curlew bird look like?
The common curlew is one of the larger waders, has streaky brown Plumage, and a characteristic 5-inch down-curved bill. The whimbrel, or Hudsonian curlew, as it is called in North America, is very much like the curlew but is smaller and less shy.
Other curlews are similar to the whimbrel in size and Plumage, except the long-billed curlew and the Madagascar curlew which are slightly larger than the common curlew. The common curlew breeds from the British Isles, across Europe and Asia to China.
Where are curlews found?
The whimbrel found occasionally in Britain and a few pairs breed in the Orkneys and Shetlands. Its range, however, is more northerly than that of the curlew with a discontinuous breeding range that includes Alaska, the west coast of Hudson's Bay, Iceland, Scandinavia, northern European Russia, and Eastern Siberia.
The long-billed curlew is the North American counterpart of the common curlew of Europe and Asia and used to breed over most of North America before farming diminished its range.
Curlews occur in Africa only as migrants, the European curlew moving as far south as South Africa. The name Madagascar curlew is a misnomer.

This bird breeds in eastern Siberia and migrates to Malaysia and Australia. It was named in error after the Macassar Straits near the Celebes, where the first specimen was collected.
Migration
Curlews are birds of open country, such as prairies, steppes, moors, and marshes, where they may gather in large flocks numbering several hundred. They also migrate in flocks, and two species are noted for their long migrations.
The Eskimo curlew, which is thought to belong to the same species as the little whimbrel of Australia and least curlew of Russia, breeds in the tundra of Alaska, then moves to Labrador and Newfoundland to feed on the ripening crowberries.

When replete it Hies south to the Argentinian pampas for the winter. Another traveler is the Bristle-thighed curlew, named after the vaneless feathers on the thighs. It also breeds in Alaska and western Canada but migrates 5000 miles to the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific.
What do curlew birds eat?
Curlews feed on a variety of animals, together with a few berries and seeds. Shellfish, crustacea, insects, worms, fish, and frogs are all eaten, depending on season and locality.
In the British Isles, cattle fields are searched for dung beetles from July to October, while in November they are deserted for stubble fields. Investigations in Hungary showed that curlews and whimbrels were taking large numbers of harmful crickets and owlet moth caterpillars and that 96% of the food of these whimbrels consisted of destructive insects.

Shores, swamps, and moors also provide sources of food. the curlews either picking it up from the surface of the ground or water or probing with their long bills for small animals living underground.
Serial monogamy is characterized by a series of long- or short-term, exclusive sexual relationships entered into consecutively over the lifespan. In common usage partners need not be married, but there is never more than one partner at a time. A serial monogamist is someone who goes from one committed relationship to the next. But they don't see it as being a character trait; instead, they would insist that they just fall in love easily. A serial monogamist finds both comfort and identity in being in a committed relationship. Define serial monogamist.
Animals picked up at the tip of the bill are tossed to the mouth by jerks of the head. The bristle-thighed curlew has an unusual habit, for a wader, of stealing eggs.
While on the Pacific islands it steals eggs of terns, and frigate birds, impaling them on its bill and carrying them away to be smashed and eaten at leisure.
Nesting in the open
The male defends his territory and advertises for a mate by singing in the air. He flies low over the ground then rises vertically and hangs poised before drifting to the ground with wings outstretched, all the time pouring out his bubbling song. The nests are grass-lined hollows in low vegetation such as heather and are found on open moors, pastures, or in woodland clearings.
Eggs
Usually, four eggs are laid, which are incubated by both parents for a month. The young are able to leave the nest shortly after hatching and they creep away to hide when not feeding with their parents.
The adult curlews defend their offspring vigorously, attacking harriers and crows, or luring enemies away by feigning injury. A long-billed curlew was once seen flopping along, as if with a broken wing, in front of a coyote. It kept just in front of the coyote, leaping ahead if the latter came too close. and was last seen leading it over a hill, at least half a mile from where it started.
Eskimo Curlew
There was a time when vast flocks of Eskimo curlew in uncountable numbers used to migrate down the eastern side of North America, having gorged themselves on the crowberries of Labrador and Newfoundland.
They were called dough birds because, when shot, their breasts split open on hitting the ground to reveal the soft, dough-like fat.
Is the Eskimo curlew extinct?
A few years ago they were thought to be extinct, and it seemed that another bird had gone the way of the passenger pigeon.
Both had existed in huge numbers but had been exterminated by a lust for killing. Hunters would go out shooting curlews, bringing down 20 or more with one shot, and when their wagons were loaded they would dump the contents and kill a second waggonful.
The story of the Eskimo curlew, however, has a happier ending than that of the passenger pigeon. In 1959 an Eskimo curlew was seen at Galveston Island, Texas, the first since 1945. Others have been seen since, so presumably, there must still be a group breeding somewhere.
In 1948 another curlew caused excitement, but not because of its rarity. Bristle-thighed curlews were well known in their winter haunts, and it was known that they migrated up to Alaska, but no one knew where they bred.
This curlew was the only bird in North America whose nest had never been seen, but in 1948 two members of a National Geographic Society expedition camped near the Yukon River, saw two Bristle-thighed curlews continually returning to one place. They approached cautiously, then running forward they saw it fly off its well-concealed nest.
